Re: Raymond Sylvester Seeley
We had traced Raymond back to be a grandson of Albert A. and Mary L. Seeley but we didn’t know Albert’s lineage and we didn’t know which son of Albert’s had fathered Raymond.
Judy Lazlo (juteshouse@comcast.net), the original submitter, found a death notice for Raymond in the Danbury (CT) News Times. , April 14, 1984:
Raymond S. Seeley, 78, formerly of Jenson’s Mobile Park, Danbury, husband of the late Evelyn Marron Seeley, died Thursday at Filosa Convalescent Home Inc., Danbury, after a long illness. Mr. Seeley was born New York City, October 8, 1905, son of the late Stewart and Margaret Meehan Seeley. He came to Danbury as a young man and was a Danbury resident most of his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater, and was a retired employee of the former Barden-Parker Corporation of Danbury. There are no immediate survivors.
The funeral will be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Friends may call at Green Funeral Home Monday after 9:30 a.m.
Judy suggests that Albert’s parents are Chester Seeley b. 1808 MA and his wife Pamela.

In our database we have:
We also have a lineage for William md to Margaret Curtis, son of Joel Butler Seeley b. 1788 New Haven CT md to Sally A Allen in 1809 in Seneca Co. NY, son of Abraham b. 1763 New Haven Ct, md to Eunice Butler in 1787 in New Haven, son of Abraham b. 1730 md Mary Barnes 1758 New Haven.
We do not know the ancestry of this Abraham Seeley (see Query 0808-6 on the SGS website).
I also found Stuart Seeley’s WWI Draft Registration but I still can’t find him or Raymond in the 1910 census.

Heather is descended from SGS# 975 Jeduthan Seely and his wife Sally Gibbs. In The 7th Generation Families of Nathaniel Seeley we list Sally’s parents as William R and Sally Mix Gibbs. This information is also widely available online. Unfortunately this is an error. The Sally Gibbs who married Jeduthan was b. 28 Sept 1781 in Utica, Oneida, NY, married Jeduthan in Onondaga Co. NY and their 1st child was born in 1802.
From the History of Cattaraugus Co. NY, “ William R Gibbs was born in the county of Saratoga, State of New York, the 25th of May, 1797. His father died when our subject was a mere child; too young, indeed, to have any remembrance of him. He was a farmer, and upon the home farm young Gibbs received his education, and passed his youth and early manhood. There, also, he was married, June 8, 1817, to Miss Sally Mix. He subsequently removed (about the year 1827) to Wayne Co., N. Y., thence to the county of Orleans, from whence, in 1834, he emigrated to this county, settling in the town of New Albion, upon the farm now occupied by his son, John S. Gibbs. He died Aug. 16, 1865, and his remains repose in the Snyder Hill cemetery, along with those of his wife, who departed June 23, 1849. Of the eight children of William and Sally Gibbs (viz.: Isaac, Elisha, Norman, Emeline, William, John S., Philemon, and Sally) two only are living at the date of this writing, – Isaac and John S.
Sally born in 1781 is obviously not a dau. of a father b. in 1797.

I looked at the 1800 census of Onondaga County, NY which is where Jeduthan Seely married Sally Gibbs (their 1st child born in 1802). The only Gibbs listed there is Lovell Gibbs.
He is listed with one male age 10-16, 1 male age 26-45; 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 16-26 and 1 female 26-45.
From http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/g/i/b/James-H-Gibbs/GENE8-0013.html#CHILD111 111.
LOVELL5 GIBBS (GERSHOM4, BENJAMIN3, SAMUEL2, GILES1) was born 23 Aug 1763 in Litchfield, Litchfield Co., CTand died Feb 1819 in Columbia Co., NY. He married (1) POLLY RUSSELL, daughter of JOHN RUSSELL and MARY LINSLEY. She was born 25 Jun 1764 in Branford, New Haven Co., CT and died 19 Dec 1797 in NY. He married (2) PAMELIA SNYDER. She was born Bet. 1753 – 1783, and died Unknown.
Child of LOVELL GIBBS and POLLY RUSSELL is:
167. Horace C.6 Gibbs, b. 25 Mar 1787, New Lebanon, Albany Co., NY; d. 18 Aug 1875, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., UT.
Apparently (from 1800 census) Lovell Gibbs had other children. Perhaps Sally belongs to this family. She named her 2nd son Horace Gibbs Seely. If you can document the true parentage of Sally Gibbs please contact me.

1910 census Kingsbury, Washington, NY
1900 Hartland, Niagara, NY

Judy and her mother have been trying to find ancestors for Elisha B. Seeley. They have information on Elisha’s descendants, but need help finding his ancestors.
Here’s what they have on Elisha B. Seeley and their sources:
Elisha B. Seeley, b. abt. 1806 in New York, d. 22 Sep 1873 in Grand Ledge, Eaton, Michigan (Eaton Co., MI Death Record #200, June 2, 1874, page 71).
Per Biography of his son, Oscar F. Seeley, MD, in the Portrait and Biographical Record of Kalamazoo, Allegan & Van Buren Counties, Michigan, page 696: His father, Elisha Seeley was also a native of the Empire State, born in the year 1808, and he was of English and French descent. He was engaged in his occupation as a farmer in New York until he came to Michigan in 1834, journeying to his future home in the wilderness by water to Detroit and by ox-team from that city into the interior of the Territory. He entered a tract of Government land near Plainwell, in Allegan County, and was one of the early settlers of that section.
We have this biography on the SGS website along with biographies of Elisha’s grandsons Harley Halstead Seeley and Dana Elisha Seeley.
Elisha married (1) Sarah Halstead, daughter of Josiah Halstead and Elsa ??? (information from Oscar Seeley’s biography referenced above). Sarah was born 01 May 1813 in Pennsylvania. She died 28 Nov 1869 in Chester, Eaton, MI (Eaton Co., MI Death Record #376, page 21).
Their children:
Emeline Seeley, b. 27 Sep 1829 in New York, d. 19 Feb 1915 in Athens, Calhoun, MI
Oscar F. Seeley, b. 12 Jun 1832 in Rochester, Monroe, NY. d. 18 Dec 1902 in Climax, Kalamazoo, MI
Myles Halstead Seeley, b. abt. 1833 in New York, d. 15 May 1900 in LeRoy, Calhoun, MI
Harley Miner Seeley, b. 16 Jun 1841 in Kalamazoo, MI, d. 14 Nov 1900 in Climax, Kalamazoo, MI
Sarah Elsie Seeley, b. 6 Aug 1844 in Michigan, d. 21 Dec 1907 in Battle Creek, Calhoun, MI
Ruel E. Seeley, b. abt. 1848 in Michigan, d. 10 Nov 1869 in Chester, Eaton, MI
Elisha married (2) Martha Hampton, daughter of Daniel Hampton and Elizabeth ???. She was born in 1817 in Ohio. She died on 14 Aug 1873 in Chester, Eaton, MI. They had no children.
Elisha appears in the 1830 census of Pittsford, Monroe, NY. In 1835 Elisha B. Seeley and Sarah Seeley became “constituent members” of First Baptist Church in Otsego, Allegan, MI. Judy found these Land Purchase records: 1838-103.59 acres, Bronson, MI land office, 1838-141.86 acres, Bronson, MI land office, 1839-33.64 acres, Kalamazoo, MI land office. Elisha appears in the 1840 census of Cooper, Kalamazoo, MI, 1850 and 1860 censuses of LeRoy, Calhoun, MI and the 1870 Census of Chester, Eaton, MI (with daughter and son-in-law Elsie and John Fisher).
Judy Mudge | jamudge@att.net
1830 census of Pittsford, Monroe, NY:
Elisha Seely: 2 males 20-30, 1 female under 5, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20
There is also a Jared Seely: 1 male 5-10, 1 male 60-70; 2 females under 5, 1 female 20-30. This led me to Jared, Lemuel and Lemuel Jr in the 1820 census of Volney, Oswego, NY. Jared, Lemuel Jr and an Elisha are all sons of Lemuel Seeley, SGS#380r. This Elisha is SGS# 1186 but according to our information he has 2 wives, neither being Sarah Halstead, and different children and died in NY state in 1847.
The only other Elisha in the 1830 census is in New Paltz, Ulster Co. NY:
1 male under 5, 2 males age 20-30, 1 female under 5, 1 age 15-20, 1 age 20-30.
However, one of the MI Land Records mentioned above states that Elisha B Seeley is ‘of Monroe County, NY’. George H Seeley and Philo Seeley of Washtenaw Co MI were granted nearby parcels of land on the same date; I don’t know if or how they might be related to Elisha.
Contact me if you have any information on Elisha B.

Carolyn sent us a copy of the application for a marriage license for Nehemiah Seeley and Rebecca Hawk, both of Mentor, OH dated the 10th March 1827 in Geauga Co. Ohio. The person who applied for the license and verified that they were legally free to marry was George Seeley. Carolyn wonders who George is.
Carolyn Sheridan | cgsheridan@bellsouth.net
We have a lot of information on Nehemiah’s descendants but nothing about a George Seeley who might be related to him.
Mentor, northeast of Cleveland, is in Lake Co. OH, which was formed in 1840 from parts of Geauga and Cuyahoga counties.
In 1830 Nehemiah is in Medina County OH, south of Cleveland. Nehemiah is age 30-40 and is listed next to Levi Seeley age 40-50.
In 1820 in Mentor, Geauga, OH there is Robert Seeley with 1 male <10, 3 males 10-16, 1 male 16-18 (Same as 1 male 16-26, 1 male >45, 3 females. Also Levi Seeley: 1 male >45, 2 females
In 1820 in Painesville, Geauga Co. there is Ira Seeley: 1 male 26-45, 1 male> 45, 2 females. Also Uri Seeley: 1 male 26-45, 5 females
If anyone can identify a possible George Seeley (old enough in 1827 to vouch for Nehemiah) please contact your Query Editor.

Judy was hoping we had some information on Diamah Seeley born 1751 (Newtown, Fairfield, CT?)., d. April 10, 1785 Newtown, CT. She married John Blackman born 1746 (Newtown, Connecticut?) son of John Blackman born 1720 & Margery Glover born 1725.
According to Judy John & Diamah Blackman had 4 children: Ebenezer Blackman born 1779, David Seeley Blackman born 1782, Simeon Seeley Blackman born March 16, 1785, John Starr Blackman born September 11, 1777. She wants to know who Diamah Seeley Blackman’s parents are.

NEHGS has this to say about the name:
DIAMAH/DIME (f): This name, borne by numerous girls in the Danbury/Newtown, Conn. area, is unrelated to the similarly-spelled DIANA and is probably instead an abbreviation of PHEDIME, itself uncommon elsewhere.
Unfortunately even this information didn’t lead me to Diamah/Dime/Phedime. Members of the query team have checked CT records without success. Does anyone out there recognize this woman?

From the census records below the birth date is dubious and he is listed as William John, not John William.

Of course John, William, John William, and William John are common names…
Also, William John’s age is not consistent in census records and none matches his gravestone. One possibility:
1871 census Ireland and Coleraine, Megantic, Quebec
There is another Sealy family in the same place, same year with a William John age 7.
After receiving this information Bill obtained a copy of William John’s death certificate, naturalization papers and marriage license. None of them give any information about William John’s birth place in Canada or names of his parents. Border crossing records are not available before 1895. If anyone can help, please let me know.
