Ruel E. Seeley Dies After Short Illness

Ruel E. Seeley, 76, of 43 South Union, retired contractor, died at 8 a.m. today in a Battle Creek hospital.  He had been ill since June, but not critically so until Wednesday.

Mr. Seeley, who retired from business eight years ago, was responsible for erection of 300 houses in the Post addition, an addition to the Post school, “Penniman Castle” at Main and Kingman avenue, now an apartment house, the lodge at Camp Ben Johnston on Sherman lake, the old Garden theater of West Michigan avenue, remodeling of the C.L. Post house on Northeast Capital avenue, 60 houses in the West Highland addition, and hundreds of other residences in the city.  During the First World war, he was one of the supervisors of building at Camp Custer.

He was born in Climax township July 30, 1870, the son of Harley and Lydia (Clark) Seeley.  He and Carrie Murray were married in Joppa, Nov. 4, 1891.  She died here in 1944.  They came to Battle Creek in 1903.  Mr. Seeley was a member of the North Baptist church of Athens.

He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Fred A. (Marguerite) Bracey of 71 South McKiney avenue, Mrs. Otis (Bertha) Ketchum of Lacey, Miss Ruella Seeley at home, and Mrs. Roy (Doris) Callaway of 135 North McKinley avenue, two sons, Harley R. Seeley of 76 Vale, and Murray Seeley of 71 North McKinley avenue and eight grand-children.
