Martha Ann Coyle Sealy

July 4, 1930 – August 2, 2017

Martha Ann Coyle Sealy passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug 2 after a brief illness. She was born July 4, 1930 which worked out well for her as she loved a party and knew in her heart that Independence Day was really secondary to her birthday. She was the only daughter of well-known San Antonio physician and surgeon, Dr & Mrs. Edward W. Coyle, and brother of the late Dr. James E. Coyle, also of San Antonio.

Marty, as she was known to her friends, grew up on Grant Ave in old Alamo Heights where she and her brother Jimmy kept horses in the pasture below Olmos Dam and rode them around the unpaved roads. After graduating early from Alamo Heights High in the class of ’47, she attended Lindenwood for a year before transferring to the University of Texas, Austin where she became an active Tri Delta and after marrying and moving back to San Antonio she shared her lifelong friendships with her Tri Delta alum sisters and friends Jane Thurmond-Gregory, Betty Ruth Cook, Beanie Berkey, Patsy Stacy, and Jo Ann Matthews.

It was at the University where her San Antonio friend and future sister-in-law, Ann McSween introduced her to the love of her life, Lane Taylor Sealy of Galveston. They shared a lifelong love of the water, boating and water skiing and were married in San Antonio, March 13, 1952. Their wedding plans had to be expedited when Lane unexpectedly received orders to report to the Air Force as the Korean War escalated. In January of 1953 Lane went overseas to Korea and her “”Daddy”” flew a pregnant Marty home to make sure his first grandchild was born on Texas soil. Marty went on to have 2 more sons and Lane returned to San Antonio where he began his life long career as a trust officer with the National Bank of Commerce until his retirement in 1980. She was an active stay at home mom and involved in many civic and social activities the rest of her life which included the Junior League, Kiwaniannes, and the Lantana Garden Club, the San Antonio Accordion Club. She was a Bible Study Fellowship Leader and member of Christ Church. She was an accomplished accordionist and piano player which gave her much comfort and a new sense of purpose after Lane’s passing. She regularly played the piano for the church service at the Towers retirement center.

Marty was preceded in death by her parents; brother; her husband, Lane Sealy and her son, John William Sealy. She is survived by her sons, Lane Taylor Sealy Jr. and Edward Coyle Sealy and his wife, Ellen and their children, Martha Eugenia “”Martita”” and Josh Hunt of El Paso, Matthew Cartwright Sealy of Cotulla, Mallory and her husband Johnny Moorman of San Antonio, Edward Hutchings “Hutch” Sealy of San Antonio, and her daughter-in-law, Tammy Sealy-Walden, and her husband Lawson Walden and her children, Lane Sealy-Green and her husband, Eric; John William Sealy Jr. and wife, Sarah, and Blake Sealy all of Austin. She had 6 cherished great grandchildren.

Many thanks to Vesta, Carmen and Debbie of Avionne Home Care and Holy Savior Hospice for their extraordinary care in her final hours. Memorials can be made to Christ Episcopal Church.
