Margaret J. Seely

Margaret Seely, 72, Longtime Church Leader, Succumbs —–
After an illness of eight weeks, Mrs. Margaret Seely, 72 wife of George B. Seely and a resident of San Jose for a half century, died yesterday morning in her home at 1215 South First street.

A native of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Seely came to California as a child, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Turner, and was raised in Humbolt county.

In 1885, she came to San Jose to attend San Jose Normal school, and while here she met George Seely, member of the widely-known Seely family, who later became a leading hay and grain merchant of this city.

They were married in April, 1887, and lived here continuously ever since, except for a year and a half spent in the San Joaquin valley, where Seely had wheat interests. For more than 40 years, the Seelys have lived in the same house on South First street where Mrs. Seely died yesterday.

Mrs. Seely’s chief interest outside her home and family was the First Methodist church of which she was a prominent member for more than 50 years. She was active in both church and Sunday school, taught a Sunday school class for a long period, and was treasurer of the First Methodist Ladies Aid society for 23 consecutive years.
She was also a member of the Pioneer society of Santa Clara county and of the Study Hour club.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Seely leaves a sister, Mrs. Charles Seely, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the John E. Dowdle mortuary, in charge of Dr. James E. Crowther, pastor of First Methodist church.
Entombment will be in the Oak Hill mausoleum.
