WAKEFIELD FUNERAL SET FOR J.L. SEELY

A funeral for John L. Seely, owner of John L. Seely Insurance Agency, will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Purviance Funeral Chapel here. Burial will follow in Wakefield Cemetery.

Mr. Seely, 61, a lifelong resident of Sussex County, died yesterday in a Richmond hospital.

A U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, Mr. Seely was on the staff of Purviance Funeral Home for more than 30 years.

He was a member and deacon of Wakefield Congregational Christian Church and a former superintendent of the church’s Sunday school.

Mr. Seely was a member of the American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters and a past president of Wakefield Ruritan Club. He also was a member of Wakefield Lodge No. 198 AF&AM and Hopewell Moose Lodge.

A musician and singer, Mr. Seely was a trumpet player for the Dixie Vagabonds Band and a member of the Commonwealth Chorus.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sarah “Dottie” Ford Seely; two daughters, Miss Katherine Gertrude Seely of Atlanta and Miss Jacquelyn Seely of Lynchburg; two sons, John Frederick Seely of Key Largo, Fla., and Walter Daniel Seely of Kemah, Texas; his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Seely of Wakefield; a brother, W.C. Seely of Wakefield; and one grandson and one stepgrandson

John L. ‘Jack’ Seely dies; was active in community

Waverly – John L. Seely, 61, of Route 1, Box 202, died Wednesday in McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital, Richmond.

He was a lifelong resident of Sussex County and was a member of Wakefield Congregational Christian Church, where he was a deacon.  He was formerly superintendent of the Sunday school, he taught the young adult class, and he also was a former member of the church choit.

He was owner and operator of John L. Seely Insurance Agency in Wakefield and was a member of the American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters, a representative of Equitable Life Assurance Society of America, and a member of American Family Health Assurance Society.

He worked on the staff at Purviance Funeral Home in Wakefield for the past 30 years.  He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and served as adjutant of England Parsons American Legion Post No. 191, Waverly.

He was past president of Wakefield Ruritan Club and he was a member of Hopewell Moose Lodge and Wakefield Masonic Lodge No. 198 AF & AM.

He served as fund drive chairman for the Sussex unit of the American Heart Association for several years.

He was a former musician and singer with the Dominion Singers of Waverly, played trumpet for the Dixie Vagabonds Band, and was a member of the Commonwealth Chorus Suffolk.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Sarah “Dottie” Ford Seely, two daughters, Ms. Katherine G. Seely of Atlanta, Ms. Jacquelyn Seely of Lynchburg; two sons, John Seely of Key Largo, Fla., and Walter D. Seely of Kemah, Texas; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Robbie H. Slade of Chester, his father, Walter C. Seely, and his stepmother, Mrs. Louise P. Seely, both of Wakefield; a sister, Mrs. Eva J. Kelley of Fort Newport Ritchie, Fla.; a brother W.C. Seely Jr. of Wakefield; a grandson; and a step-grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Purviance Funeral Chapel, Wakefield, by the Rev. Donald Chick.

Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery, Wakefield.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence of W.C. Seely St., Route 1, Waverly.

The family requests that expression of sympathy take the form of contributions to a local rescue squad or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
