John J. Seeley Passes Suddenly In Greenwich

John J. Seeley, 54, of Ridge St., prominent Connecticut Democratic leader and treasurer of the Putnam Trust Co. of Greenwich, died suddenly this morning in the Greenwich hospital.  He had been seized with a heart attack at his home last Sunday, but his condition had not been considered serious.

Mr. Seeley was chairman of the Fairfield Democratic County Committee, was a member of the Greenwich School Board since 1939 and vice chairman since 1941, was head of the March of Dimes in Greenwich and active in other civic and fraternal affairs.  He was elevated to the post of treasurer of the bank in August, 1942.

Mr. Seeley was Past Exalted Ruler of the Greenwich Lodge of Elks, a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, past Grand Knight of the Greenwich Council, K. of C. and president of its Home Association for 20 years.  He was also a former officer of the Volunteer Fire Co. and treasurer of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Although active in Democratic circles for many years he had never sought public office except on the School Board on which he was completing his second term.

Mr. Seeley was born in Riverside, the son of William and Nellie Seeley, on Oct. 9, 1890.

He was formerly agent for the Greenwich office of the Adams Express Co. prior to 1917 when he went to work in the Old Greenwich National Bank.

When the Putnam Trust Co. and the Greenwich National Bank consolidated in 1923, Mr. Seeley joined the new banking organization.

In the years that followed, he worked in practically every department of the bank.  In 1935, he was promoted from head teller to assistant treasurer, a post he held until elected treasurer in 1942.  A year later he was made a director.

He was married on Oct. 7, 1913 to the former Brigid McCormack.  In addition to his widow, he leaves two sons, Pvt. John J. Seeley, former special investigator for the Department of Justice; Lt. William F. Seeley, flight leader in the AAF, and two grandchildren.  Other survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Catherine Doran, Mrs. Elizabeth Weisheit, Mrs. Henry Juan, all of Greenwich, and Mrs. Jane Haviland of New Jersey; one brother, William Seeley of Greenwich and his mother.

The funeral has been tentatively set for Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of which he was a member, pending the arrival of his son, Pvt. John Seeley.
