Hannah Maria Seeley

Death of Mrs. Hannah M. Seeley

Northumberland lost one of its best known and most highly esteemed elderly women last Sunday when Mrs. Hannah Maria Seeley suddenly passed away at the home of her son, Charles Seeley, on upper Front street.  The deceased for years was troubled with her heart, and she had frequent attacks of rheumatism.  She had been in failing health for the past two years, but last week her condition seemed to be unusually good, and she expected to go out with her son in his automobile Sunday morning, and to spend this week at the home of her grandson, Myron Seeley, in this place.  She died about 9:00 A.M., shortly after arising to dress.

The maiden name of Mrs. Seeley was Hannah Maria Sherwood, and she was born in Mansfield, Tioga county, Pa., on October 8, 1835.  She would have been 81 years old next October.  She was married to Randolph M. Seeley, a native of south Jersey, and they lived in Glassboro, N.J., before locating in Northumberland, 43 years ago.  For many years they owned a small farm and lived along the Danville road on the outskirts of the town.  After Mr. Seeley’s death about five years ago, Mrs. Seeley made her home with her son.

The deceased left four brothers as follows: Porter Sherwood of Lambscreek, Tioga county, Pa., Warren of Sidney, N.Y., George of Rochester, N.Y., and Orville of Sunbury.  Besides Charles Seeley of this place she also left another son, Ebenezer of Afton, N.Y.

Mrs. Seeley was a devoted member of the Park M.E. church for many years, and was known to possess many fine traits of Christian character by those who came in frequent contact with her.  She was one of those women whose passing away is felt, not only by the immediate relatives, but by a large number of people in the community.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, and was conducted by Rev. Dr. F.W. Leidy of Sunbury, former pastor of the deceased.  Members of the chorus of the M.E. church sang her favorite hymns, “Sometime We’ll Understand,” and “Asleep in Jesus.”  The casket bearers were Myron Geddes, M.A. McFarland, F.M. Van Devender, T.F. Freeburn, Harry Hawley and Charles Bolig.  E.K. Bright had charge of the funeral.  Interment in Riverview cemetery.

Among those who attended the funeral from out of town were Warren Sherwood of Sidney, N.Y., George Sherwood of Rochester, N.Y., Mrs. Porter Sherwood of Lambscreek, Pa., Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sherwood of Geneva, N.Y., and Mr. and Mrs. Will Boyle of Scranton, Pa.
