Holt – Chuck was born on July 14, 1927 in Mason, Michigan where he grew up, the youngest of four children. As a youngster he lived for baseball, a love he pursued well into adulthood as an outstanding player and coach. Following his WWII service in the Marine Corps he married Edna Hamlin of Mason, graduated from Michigan State College, and went on to pursue a life long career in education.
Chuck loved children, relishing his various roles as teacher, coach, Principal and Superintendent and serving school systems in Mancelona, Capac, and East Lansing. In 1966 he joined, and then became Director of the Office of Admissions at MSU, and subsequently at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.
Throughout his life Chuck was unfailingly kind, thoughtful, and genuinely interested in others. He cherished opportunities to contribute to the community at large, most particularly through the University United Methodist Church, literacy programs, the Salvation Army, and Kiwanis, and as docent at the Michigan History Museum.
Chuck is survived by Edna, his wife of 69 years; his sister Elizabeth Robinson; son, Michael; daughter, Patricia (Richard) Aslin; grandsons, Chris (Rachel Goldwasser) and Tim Aslin; great grandchildren, Chana and Henry; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family extends our deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff at Sparrow Hospice House for their incomparable compassion and loving care that eased Chuck through his final days.
His memorial service will be held Sunday, October 7 at 2:30 p.m. in the Great Lakes Christian Homes Chapel (2050 S. Washington Rd., Holt). Memorial contributions in his honor can be directed to the charity of one’s choice.
