Bernard Eugene Cilley, 86

PORTLAND — Bernard Eugene Cilley, 86, of Portland, passed away Thursday in Portland at a local hospital.
He was born on Dec. 15, 1925, the son of Bernard Samuel and Katherine Maxwell Cilley.

He attended the Portland schools. He then went on to work for Oakhurst Dairy, and Meloons Greenhouses. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII, where he was assigned to the U.S.S. Redwood. After his tour, he worked for Sealtest Ice Cream for 36 years, retiring in 1982 as shop foreman. After his retirement, he worked for Forest City Chevrolet.
He was involved with the Boy Scouts and was a Cub Scout leader, as well as a Little League coach on Munjoy Hill in Portland. He played softball with the Portland Industrial League and enjoyed bowling, as well as the Boston Red Sox.

He was predeceased by his son, Russell Gagnon; grandson, Jason Gagnon; and brother, Herbert L. Cilley. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pauline Phinney Cilley of Portland; three sons, George W. Gagnon, Jr. and wife Frances of Gorham, Wayne E. Cilley and wife Debra of Waterboro, John Doughty and wife Darlene of Westbrook, a daughter, Ponda Stanhope and husband David of Old Orchard Beach; a brother, Philip S. Cilley and wife Isabelle of Westbrook, four sisters, Bertha M. Lapan of Hudson, N.H., Winona E. Cilley of Nashua, N.H., Katherine Joan Winslow of Portland, Jane Sampson and husband Paul of Nashua, N.H.; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. Funeral services will follow at 12 Noon at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will be at Brooklawn Memorial Cemetery, Congress Street in Portland.
