FARMER, LONG ILL, HANGS HIMSELF IN CHICKEN HOUSE

Body of Algie L. Seeley, 66, of Weedsport Found This Morning After Long Search – Disappeared From Wood Cutting Task – Would Have Celebrated Birthday Tomorrow

Despondency over ill health is believed to have prompted Algie L. Seeley, 66 to commit suicide sometime late yesterday morning by hanging from a rafter in a chicken house on his farm about one mile east of the Village of Weedsport.  His lifeless body was found shortly after 1 o’clock this morning by Charles Tintsworth and Jerry Murray of Weedsport, who had become alarmed over his disappearance and had instituted a search.

During the winter months, Mr. Seeley and his wife had resided at the home of Charles Tinsworth in Weedsport.  Every morning it was Mr. Seeley’s custom to go to his farm to attend his stock and other chores.  Recently, he and Mr. Tintsworth had been cutting trees in a nearby small woods.  When his friend failed to appear at the woods yesterday morning as usual, Mr. Tintsworth returned to the farmhouse but found only Mr. Seeley’s overcoat.

Returning to the village in the evening.  Mr. Tintsworth learned that his companion had been absent all day.  With Mr. Murray, Mr. Tintsworth searched the farmhouse and barns thoroughly, to no avail.  Finally, the searchers discovered footprints in the snow leading to the chicken house.  The door was locked from the inside forcing the door, the two Weedsport men were started to see Seeley’s body suspended from a rafter.

Dr. C.E. Goodwin of Weedsport was summoned but the man had been dead for several hours.  Doctor Goodwin notified Dr. A.F. Hodgeman, Cayuga County coroner who gave a verdict of “suicide by hanging.”  Mr. Seeley would have been 67 years old tomorrow.

The body was removed to the Abner Hoyt funeral home in Weedsport.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Seeley of Weedsport; three sons, Joseph Seeley of Syracuse, Leslie Seeley of Rochester, and Raymond Seeley of Jordan; one daughter, Mrs. Clarence Sayles of Earlville; one sister, Mrs. James Comenale of Auburn.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon at Hoyt’s Funeral Home, Weedsport.  Rev. Jesse Mullette, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Weedsport, will officiate.  Interment will be in Weedsport Rural Cemetery.

ALGIE SEELEY ENDS OWN LIFE

Despondent Over Ill Health, Hangs Self From Rafter In Chicken House On Farm

The body of Algie L. Seeley, 66, who committed suicide by hanging from a rafter in a chicken house on his farm about one mile east of the village of Weedsport last Thursday morning, was laid to rest in Weedsport Rural Cemetery Sunday afternoon.  Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Jesse Mullette, pastor of the Weedsport Methodist Episcopal Church, in the Hoyt Funeral home at 2:30 funeral home at 2:30.

The lifeless body of the farmer was not discovered until 1 o’clock Friday morning by Charles Tintsworth and Jerry Murray of Weedsport, who became alarmed over his disappearance and started to search for him.  During the winter months, Mr. and Mrs. Seeley had been living with Mr. Tintsworth at his home in Weedsport.  It had been Mr. Seeley’s custom to go each morning to his farm and to attend to his stock and other chores.  Recently he and Mr. Tintsworth had been cutting trees in a nearby small woods.

Mr. Seeley failed to show up at the woods for work Thursday but Mr. Tintsworth thought nothing of that until he returned home in the evening and learned that Mr. Seeley had not been there during the day.  With Mr. Murray, Mr. Tintsworth started a search but no trace of the missing man was found at the farm house or the barns.  The searchers there came upon footprints in the snow that lead them to the chicken house, the door of which they found barred from the inside.  Forcing an entrance, they found the lifeless body of Mr. Seeley suspended by a rope from a rafter.

Dr. C.E. Goodwin of Weedsport was summoned but the man it was found, had been dead for several hours.  Doctor Goodwin notified Dr. A.F. Hodgeman, Cayuga County coroner, who rendered a verdict of “suicide by hanging.” Despondency of ill health was ascribed as the motive for the suicide.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Seeley of Weedsport; three sons, Joseph Seeley of Syracuse, Leslie Seeley of Rochester, and Raymond Seeley of Jordan; a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Sayles of Earlsville; and a sister, Mrs. James Comenale of Auburn.
