Laura Larentius of Coffeyville, KS, reports that among the photos she found in her grandmother’s attic there is an 8×10 picture of a child about a year in age. Tucked in the corner of the picture is an undated clipping— presumably they belong together— which reads:
FRUSTRATION
Tucson, Ariz— Two days after George Gordon Seeley, 20, a University of Arizona senior, broke his neck in a diving accident, Senator Carl Hayden nominated him for appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. For eight months he took hospital treatments, still hoping to fulfill his life-long ambition of attending the Academy. Then Seeley died of complications caused by pneumonia.
*******
Sen. Hayden served as Arizona Senator for 42 years until his retirement in 1969, which is as close as the photo can be dated. If anyone can place George in their family and would like this photo and news article, please contact Ms. Larentius at: llaurent@terraworld.net or l_laurentius@yahoo.com.
