Marjorie E. Smith
1924 – 2018
Marjorie E. Smith died in March in her Glenville, NY home with her family by her side. She was born in Beaverkill, NY in 1924 and enjoyed a happy childhood growing up in Livingston Manor, NY with her parents David and Ethel Seeley and her three sisters and four brothers. She went on to SUNY Oneonta where she was a member of the Agonian Sorority, earned Bachelors and master’s degrees in Education, and met her future husband Robert G. Smith who she married at Christ Church in Cooperstown, NY in 1955. Marjorie began her career as an Elementary School teacher with positions in her hometown and Cooperstown before taking an Assistant Professorship at the Bugbee School in Oneonta, NY. After she married, she moved to Scotia and then Rexford, NY and taught Kindergarten for seventeeen years at Shenendehowa CSD. Marjorie’s creativity and love of children made teaching the ideal profession for her. Although she remained active in retirement, she often spoke of returning to work. A steadfast and loyal friend; a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, she will be missed as long as those who were close to her live. Born a premature baby, she had a giant spirit which kept her alive at birth and saw her through the next 93 years. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, her devoted son, Robert; her daughter, Vicki McCormick; her grandson, Ryan McCormick; her son-in-law, John McCormick; her sister, Clara Winner and nieces and nephews. A family gathering will be held at her place of burial in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
