LAURA J. DUKE, 94

TOWNSEND – Laura J. (Seeley) Duke, 94, of 66 Bayberry Hill Road, formerly of Fitchburg, died Sunday in Keystone Nursing Home, Leominster, after an illness.

Her husband, Oren E. Duke, died several years ago. She leaves a daughter, Marjorie J. Kumpu of Townsend, with whom she lived; two sisters, Kathleen Lowe of Fitchburg and Ethel LaBatte of Amesbury; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, George E. Duke of Wilbraham, died in 1974. Born in Lubec, Maine, daughter of George W. and Frances E. (Fletcher) Seeley, she lived many years in Fitchburg and Townsend. She graduated from Lubec High School.

Mrs. Duke was a switchboard operator 40 years at New England Telephone Co. in Fitchburg, Leominster, Gardner and Townsend. She retired in 1967.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Fitchburg, and a member and former adviser of its Girls Friendly Society. She was a member of the Townsend Women’s Club and the Ladies Benevolent Society at Townsend Congregational Church. She was a former member of the Fitchburg Women’s Club and Lady Emma Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in Fitchburg.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Christ Episcopal Church, 569 Main St., Fitchburg. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Coggshall Park, 718 Main St., Fitchburg 01420. Moorcroft Funeral Home, 31 Myrtle St., is directing arrangements.
