Joan Sealy Mccoy James, 68

COLUMBIA – On July 9, 2012, the sterling life of Joan Sealy McCoy James, 68, came to an end, leaving in her wake a multitude of family, relatives and friends who rejoice in having known her but sad for her all too early exit from this life. Joan lost her second valiant fight against cancer but through it all she loved her God, her family and her many friends. Joan was born in Rock Hill, S.C., the daughter of the late Robert Nelson Sealy and Aggidel Smith Sealy. During her teenage years her family moved to Columbia, where she attended University High School, after which she attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1966. She was blessed with two children but one, Jessica Lyn McCoy Wright (Christopher) preceded her in death.

On January 31, 2012 Joan and her husband, Scott, celebrated thirty-one years of wedded bliss.

A memorial service to celebrate Joan’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Ashland United Methodist Church, 2600 Ashland Road, Columbia, SC 29210 with visitation beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.

Left to mourn her passing are husband, Wayne Scott James; son, Zack Barr McCoy IV; son-in-law, Christopher Wayne Wright of Woodruff; stepdaughters, Patricia Alice Trimble (John) of Adrian, Michigan, Amy Elizabeth Hamby (Johnny) of Covington, Ga.; grandchildren, Macy Sierra Wright, Abigail Grace Trimble, Madeline Elizabeth Trimble, Emily Rose Hamby, twins, Benjamin James and Jackson Lafayette Hamby; sister, Barbara Higgins (John); brother, Robert Nelson Sealy Jr. (Alice); nieces and nephews, John Michael Higgins, Lauren Higgins Pittman (Mark) and their children, Shelby, Aaron and Noel Pittman, Allison Elizabeth Sealy and Robert Nelson Sealy III (Jade) and their son, Robert Nelson Sealy IV.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Joan’s memory be made to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, POB 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648 or to Ashland United Methodist Church, 2600 Ashland Road, Columbia, SC 29210.

The family thanks all those who contributed in any way toward giving peace, joy and comfort to Joan over the past few years with the death of her daughter and in her battles with cancer. To our family, our friends, our church family, former co-workers and our Connie Maxwell Children’s Home extended family, all of you were invaluable to the family through all of this.
