Mrs. Ida Hughey Dies in Sleep at Round Pond

Had Operated Store There for 45 Years

Mrs. Ida M. Hughey, 73, died unexpectedly in her sleep Wednesday night of last week at her home near Round Pond, north of Shawneetown.

Familiarly known to most as “Ma” Hughey, she operated a general store at Round Pond for the past 45 years where she made new acquaintances day after day and enjoyed visiting with all who stopped at her location.

She was a 33-year member of the Rebekah lodge where she was financial secretary for six years, and was a member of the Emmanuel Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wright Funeral Home in Shawneetown with the Rev. James Johnson of Eldorado, and the Rev. John Hunt, local Methodist pastor, officiating. Interment was in Westwood cemetery.

Her parents were the late Jesse and Catherine Wertz Seelye, and she was born at Shawneetown on June 12, 1889. On June 21, 1913, she was united in marriage with J.W. Hughey at the Methodist Parsonage in Shawneetown, who with a daughter, Carrie Elizabeth, preceded her in death. Also a sister, Mrs. Amy Brokmeyer and a brother, Edgar Seelye.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Mrs. Charles Q. (Iva Jean) Vineyard of Godfrey, Ill., a grandson, Edgar (Buddy) Joyner of Cottage Ills, Ill., two sisters, Mrs. Wm (Bertha) Barnett and Mrs. Fred (Catherine) Gunzel, both of Shawneetown, a brother, Ernest Seelye, also of Shawneetown, one great-grandson, and numerous other relatives.
