Native of Toledo Had Made Her Home With Sons in Mattoon

Mrs. Calista Rice, who would have been 101 years old May 9, died Friday afternoon at the home of her sons, Bert and Frank Hallett, 721 North Fourth street, following an illness of only three days.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon at the Mitchell funeral home. Clayton W. Hutton will read Christian Science services. Burial will be in the Jewett cemetery.

Mrs. Rice was born at Toledo May 9, 1846, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Seeley, natives of Pennsylvania and pioneers of Illinois. She was first married to William Hallett in 1870. He died in 1883. She was married to Amos Rice of Toledo in 1886. He died several years ago. A son and a daughter, Charles and Margaret Hallett, preceded her in death.

Relatives relate that Mrs. Rice retained a remarkable memory until her death and had always enjoyed good health. Her sight allowed her to read newspapers even during her last days.

Surviving are three sons, Frank and Bert Hallett of Mattoon and Oren Rice of Toledo; two daughters, Mrs. Melvin Cathers of Toledo and Mrs. Garvey Latner of Washington, D.C.; 28 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
