Bertha West – 1927-2011 – Bertha Eleanor West of Woodstock, New Brunswick passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at the Upper River Valley Hospital. Born in Woodstock, New Brunswick on June 16, 1927, daughter of the late Hubert F. and Joy (Small) Seely. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Albert West in November 3, 1982 and one brother Creighton F. Seely. She is survived by her children Pamela Louise Genesse (Yves) of Woodstock, NB and Mark West of Lower Woodstock, NB. Two grandchildren Christy Scott and her husband Charles and Nicholas West.
Two great grandchildren Miranda Scott and Charlie Scott. One sister, Mary Townshend (Allan) and sister-in-law Nora Seely . Nieces and Nephews. Mrs. West attended school in Woodstock, NB through Grade 11 before attending Acadia University in Wolfville, NB . She graduated from Carleton County Vocational School, Woodstock NB in 1946. She commenced work with Winslow & Winslow in 1946 and in 1958 became the Director and Secretary of all the Winslow companies. The 1971 edition of “Two Thousand Women of Achievement” included Mrs. West’s biography and she was awarded a diploma for Distinguished Achievement. The 1972 edition of “Community Leaders of America” honoured Mrs. West for Distinguished Outstanding Notable Past Achievements, Outstanding Ability, and Service to Community and State. Mrs. West held Life Memberships in the C.A.M.R. (Woodstock & District Branch and the New Brunswick Division.) She received two Awards in connection with Literacy…One from Laubach Literacy New Brunswick Division for “Outstanding Service” and one from The Carleton County Literacy Council for “Her Contribution to Literacy in Carleton County”. She was active in the United Church of Canada C.G.I.T and was Provincial Secretary for a year. She was also active in the United Baptist Church Girl Guides. She worked as a canvasser for various groups in Woodstock including the Victorian Order of Nurses. She was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Arthritis Society, New Brunswick Division.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service to be held on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Gertrude’s Church, Woodstock NB with Father John Keoughan officiating. Interment will follow at the Woodstock Rural Cemetery at a later date.
