Mrs. Alta Ellen Caldwell

VANDALIA – Funeral services for Mrs. Alta Ellen Caldwell, 74, of Vandalia, were conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Presbyterian Church in Vandalia. The Rev. Wallace Thurman officiated and music was provided by Mrs. Carl Lovelace and Mrs. Albert Kristofferson.

Interment was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vandalia with nephew of Mrs. Caldwell as pallbearers.

Mrs. Caldwell died Sept. 15 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after becoming suddenly ill while visiting her daughter, Donna in Mechanicsville, Iowa. She was a lifelong resident of the Vandalia area and a member of Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church.

She was born July 6, 1900, one of eight children of Thomas Edward and Ida May James Seeley. She was married Jan. 10, 1920 to Hugh Ramsey Caldwell who preceded her in death.

Surviving are 12 children, Mrs. Roy (Mary Mae) Dutler of Guthrie Center, Iowa, Mrs. Winnie Luckett of Curryville, Mrs. Bliss (Agnes) Roberts of Louisiana, Lew Caldwell of Montgomery City, Ray and Hugh Ramsey Caldwell Jr., of Vandalia, Harry Lee Caldwell of Flora, Ill., Mrs. James (Maxine) Caldwell of Mechanicsville and Misses Karen and Sharon Caldwell, twins, at home.

Also surviving are 23 grandchildren and numerous other relatives including a brother, Hugh Seeley of Vandalia and two sisters, Miss Minnie Seeley of Wellsville and Mrs. Homer (Hazel) Rentrfro of Farber.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two brothers, two sisters, a grandson and a son-in-law.
