Nathaniel Seeley was born in Saratoga Co. on April 1, 1801, the son of Daniel and Phoebe Wood Seeley, and at the age of about twenty years removed to Seneca County where he was married to Miss Betsy Kinne who was born on October 31, 1803 and died on June 12, 1869. Among their children were Betsey Seeley who died on February 15, 1837 at the age of two years; Nathan and Hannah Seeley who died on May 13, 1845 at the age of eight years; Martha C. Seeley who died on May 15, 1847 at the age of eight years; Daniel W. Seeley who died in California in August 1858; and John Ferguson Seeley born on June 27, 1844, who was a prominent merchant in this village, married Miss Martha P. Grover on December 25, 1867 and removed to Caro, Michigan, in 1878. Nathaniel Seeley was an axe-maker, manufacturing a superior instrument under the name of “The Red Jacket” axe. He died in Ovid Village on November 1, 1887.
