Nell LaVerne Wheeler

Sept. 6, 1923 – May 1, 2005

Nell LaVerne Wheeler died May 1, 2005, at Big Sky care center in Helena, Mont. She was born Sept., 6, 1923, in Conrad to Mark Bruce Wheeler and Isabell (Foster) Wheeler. By her request no funeral services will be held.

Nell graduated from Valier High School in 1940. She served in the U.S. Navy as a Control Tower operator at Grosse Ile, Mich. Upon discharge from the service she entered Barnard College in New York City and completed 2 years. She finished her college degree in journalism with honors at the University of Montana in Missoula in 1967. She was a life member of UM Alumni Association, the DAV, and the Seeley Genealogical Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Joanne (Ronnie) Fierbaugh, and a nephew, Stanley Fierbaugh.

Survivors include sisters Louise E. Wheeler of Forest Hills, N.Y., Catherine Fifer and husband Robert of Helena; brother-in-law Roger Fierbaugh (Mary) of Delaware, Ohio; nieces Patricia Hodge and husband Dan and sons Daniel and Steven, Julie Schultz and husband Craig of Salt Lake City, Utah, Susan Feldman and husband Marc of Kirkwood, Mo., and David Fierbaugh and wife Janice and sons Daniel and James of Tyler, Texas.

Nell lived her life with high ethics, integrity, insatiable curiosity and keen intellect.

Military graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery, Fort Harrison, with Lewis and Clark Veterans Council conducting. Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home was entrusted with local arrangements. Family prefers memorial of the donors’ choice
