Vergie Lee Seeley

December 1, 1924 – September 1, 2017

Vergie Lee Seeley (Vergie) of Red Bank, Tennessee, died on 1 September, 2017 at Life Care Center of Hixson after a brief illness. She was 92. She was born December 1, 1924 in Pontotoc, Mississippi, near Tupelo, the daughter of Luther P. and Essie Lee. She graduated from Jackson High School in May 1943 and then took a troop train to Austin, Texas to marry Jesse Robert Seeley who was stationed in San Marcos in Army Air Force Flight Navigation School. A prominent Jackson lawyer told her he would give her a position in his office if she would just not go to Texas to get married. She replied, “I’m going to Texas.” And she did. Together Vergie and Jesse had four children, Jesse Robert Jr., James Larry, Sharon Patrice, and Phillip Lee. As an Air Force wife she lived all over the world from Kaufbeuren, Germany to Eilson Air force Base in Alaska. But she considered Red Bank her real home having settled there after her husband’s assignment to Chattanooga in 1965. After years as a homemaker and mother, she undertook a career with K-Mart Corporation where she worked faithfully from March 1970 until her retirement in April 1984. She was an avid collector of cookbooks and loved making magic in the kitchen, a talent many family and friends greatly appreciated. For more than fifty years she was a member of the Red Bank Baptist Church. She cherished her role in the church community and the many friends she made there over the years. Her Sunday school class “Truthseekers” was especially beloved. She and husband Robert were lunchtime fixtures at the Southern Star restaurant where they were fussed over and spoiled to a fault. The two of them considered each and every one who worked at “The Star” to be one of their own. Vergie will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband of seventy-four years, Jesse Robert Seeley, Sr. and sons James Larry Seeley and Phillip Lee Seeley (Vicki). She was preceded in death by her children Jesse Robert Seeley, Jr. (Maryjane) and Sharon Patrice Seeley Finnell (Mike). Her mother and father also preceded her in death, as did her siblings: Jewel Lee Johnson, Wendell Holmes Lee, Luther Phillip (LP) Lee, Robert Ewell Lee, and Wilmer Byron Lee. A host of adoring grand children and great grandchildren continue her legacy, Including: Eric Richardson and his daughter Olivia Brienne Richardson; Margaret Brittany Seeley Furniss (Kris) and children Colin Archer and Gray Alexander Furniss; Adriane Elise Seeley Pinner (Nathan) and children Samuel Andrew and Sybil Elise Pinner; Emily Victoria Seeley Goodman (Brady) and children Fisher Patton and Penelope Rae Goodman; Phillip Alexander Seeley; Maryjane Bandach (Missy) and children Maryjane, Jeffery Vincent, and Michael James Bandach; Tracy Seeley Coleman; and Amy Jean Seeley Richards (Dennis) and daughter Juliette Mae Richards.
