R. Mark Seeley

1964 ~ 2019

Robert Mark Seeley, lovingly known by his family and friends as Mark, passed away in Alpine, Utah, on Saturday, March 9, 2019. He was 54 years old.

Mark was born on June 24, 1964, in Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah. He was the second child of Robert and Mary Seeley. Mark was born with a rare genetic condition, Alagillesyndrome, that affected the development of his liver and heart, but he never let this get in the way of living a full and joyful life. As a young boy, Mark moved with his family to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he attended kindergarten and elementary school. In 1972, at the age of eight, Mark had open heart surgery performed to correct an atrial septal defect and pulmonic valve stenosis. This was at the time a very risky surgery, but Mark recovered gracefully.

As a boy, Mark loved sports, especially basketball and swimming. In 1973, he moved with his family to Lake Charles, Louisiana. He attended and graduated from Alfred M. Barbe High School in Lake Charles in 1984. Mark was an Eagle Scout. He served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Las Vegas, Nevada, from 1985–1986.

Mark began his college education at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. He then attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences in 1997. After graduation, Mark moved to Brookfield, Connecticut, where his family was living, and worked for MCI, Inc. He later worked for Cigna Health Insurance in Hartford, Connecticut.

In 2003, Mark moved to Utah, where he worked for Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield for many years. He joined Sutter Physician Services in 2013, where he worked up to the time of his passing.

Mark was always a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a high priest in the Melchizedek Priesthood. He quietly and faithfully served in many callings, including high school seminary teacher, elders quorum instructor, CERT coordinator, assistant ward clerk, and high priest group secretary. He loved serving in the temple, singing in the ward choir, and reading about the lives of latter-day prophets and apostles. He was a fount of knowledge about the gospel.

Mark was known for his sense of humor and was often the comic relief in his family. He loved teasing his nieces and nephews, following his favorite professional sports teams, and traveling with his family. Mark was endlessly patient, faithful, humble, courageous, and good-natured, despite the challenges he faced.

In November 2018, Mark was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. He faced his illness with grace and dignity and was an example to all he knew in both life and death. He passed quietly on the morning of March 9, after spending the previous evening surrounded by his family.

Mark is survived by his parents, Robert Thomas Seeley and Mary Thomas Seeley of Southbury, Connecticut. He is also survived by his brother, James (Linda) Seeley, with whose family he lived for many years, as well as two sisters, Rusley (Russell) Newbold and Alyson (William) Freedman and twelve nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 15, at 10:30 am at the chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 285 North Matterhorn Drive, Alpine, Utah. Family and friends may call on Thursday, March 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the church and on Friday, March 15 from 9:00 to 10:00 am prior to services. Interment will take place at the Alpine City Cemetery.
