Hugh E. Seely

The death of Hugh E. Seely occurred on Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Fort Myers, Florida, after a most courageous 22-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born in Edmundston, N.B. October 23, 1925; son of the late W. Lee Seely and K. Lillian (Miller) Seely. He is survived by his wife of 52 1/2 years, Peggy (Stephenson) Seely of Fort Myers, Florida; his brother Ken (Vivian) of Fredericton, N.B. and a loving sister-in-law and caregiver Faye Stephenson of Hamilton, Ontario, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Hugh was educated in Public and High schools in Edmundston and Woodstock, N.B. and the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, N.B. graduating with a B.Sc. (Civil Engineering) in 1947.

He served in the Second World War with the Canadian Army 1944 – 1945 as an Instructor of Advanced Training. Recreations included travel, golf and curling. He held Club membership with Hamilton Golf and Country, Burlington Golf and Country, The Ontario Club of Toronto and the Canadian Club.

Hugh had a distinguished business career. He joined Robertson – Irwin Limited Sales Office, Montreal, Quebec, in 1948 with subsequent marketing service and various appointments in Toronto and Hamilton; appointed President, General Manager and Director, Robertson-Irwin Limited and H.H. Robertson Company Limited 1970-1981. During these years he was a Director and President, Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute (3 terms); Director Canadian Steel Industries Construction Council; Member Engineering Institute of Canada (Chairman, Hamilton Branch); Member, Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario; Director,.Member and Big Brother of Rotary Club; Member, Chamber of Commerce of Hamilton and District; Member of Hamilton Citizens Advisory Board for the Salvation Army; Director of Hamilton Automobile Club; Trustee Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and Chairman, Industry Sector, The United Way of Hamilton.

In 1981 Hugh was promoted to President, Chief Operating Officer and Director of H.H. Robertson Company-International in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. He retired December 31, 1986 because of ill health and took up permanent residence in Fort Myers, Florida.

A memorial service will be held in Fort Myers, Florida, on Monday, April 29, 2002, 3:00 pm at Phil Kiser Funeral Home, 9231 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers, Florida.
