Maude C. Seeley

MRS. Maude (CHENEY) SEELEY, of Pasadena, Calif., a resident member since 1923, was born at Essex, Conn., 2 August 1861, the daughter of George Arthur and Sarah Bucklin (Greene) Cheney, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Welles, in Altadena, Calif., 12 November 1926.

She was a descendant of John Cheney, who was at Roxbury, Mass., in 1635, and was a freeman at Newbury, Mass., in 1637, through Peter, 1639-1694/5, John, 1666-1750, Edmund, 1696-1761, Moses, 1715-1759, Elias, 1741/2-1832, Samuel, 1778-1829, of Thornton, N.H., Alfred, 1804-1869, who was born at Thornton, married Harriet Crawford, and died in Boston, and George Arthur, her father, who was born at Salem, N.H., 25 August 1828, and married at Providence, R.I., 22 May 1853, Sarah Bucklin Greene, daughter of Rufus and Minerva (Sutton) Greene of Providence.

She was educated at Madame de Silva’s boarding school in New York City and at a school in Geneva, where she studied French; and she was married in New York City, 23 January 1884, to William Graydon Seeley, B.A. (Yale, 1879) son of George Henry and Sarah (Stevens) Seeley and a descendant of Robert Seeley, who was at Watertown, Mass., in 1630, and was later of Connecticut. Her husband was a member of the firm of Arnold, Cheney & Company, importers and East India merchants, and had previously been an agent in Chicago for a number of years for Seeley Brothers of New York City. In 1892 Mr. and Mrs. Seeley became residents of Brookline, Mass.; and he continued in active business life until 1902 and died at Brookline 16 November 1919.

Mrs. Seeley was affiliated with the Unitarian denomination, being a member of the First Parish Church of Brookline and later of the Union Liberal Church in Pasadena, Calif., and her activities were centered largely in the church. She spent the winters in the later years of her life at Pasadena.

Her two children, George Cheney Seeley, Ph.B. (Yale, 1914), of Essex, Conn., and Muriel Seeley (Mrs. Robert Welles of Altadena, Calif.), B.A., (Smith, 1910), survive her.
