SEELY – Margaret E. (Peg) passed away peacefully on May 8th 1996. Fond of recalling her New England (Plantsville, Connecticut) origins and relatives. Peg was more “native Californian” and “Newporter” than most, having lived on Balboa Island since 1942. Previous to that she was a resident of San Francisco.
Peg made friends easily and her “family” of friends far exceeded her immediate family which, following World War II, consisted only of Peg and her son Hall. The sources of her many friends were diverse and included old acquaintances from the World War II Santa Ana Army Air Force Base days; her work at Newport-Balboa Savings and Loan when Lido Isle was beginning its development; good times at the Village Inn on Balboa Island; the congregation at the Community Congregational Church in Corona del Mar; and her memberships in the Assistance League of Newport Beach, the Smith College Club of Orange County, and the Newport Beach Lady Anglers.
A wider circle of friends were the patients who benefited from Peg’s dedicated and caring work as Medical Assistant for Drs. Barnett and John Palmer Miller over a span of 35 years. Also, anyone walking by her old beach house on Balboa Island was likely to be greeted warmly from the open top of her Dutch door. After increasing frailty forced her to move, passersby would inquire, and still do – where is Peg and how’s she doing.
Peg is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Hall and Melinda Seely of Newport Beach and by her grandchildren, Susan Seely and Robert Seely. The family requests that any donations in her memory be given to the church or charity of your choice.
