Tragedy on The Carmel
Frank SEELEY Crushed Under Two Tons Of Hay On Thursday
Wagon Which He Was Driving Overturned on a Sidehill — Dead Body Found Later —

Another tragic death has occurred to a farmer while engaged in his peaceful pursuits within the past week. Close observers note that there is no accounting for the time and place where death comes to the unwary, and that pastoral vocations are not immune from the dread Reaper. The first part of the week, a plowman was found dead in his furrow and now comes the news from Monterey that another farmer has died while in the performance of his daily tasks. This time it was Frank SEELEY, a prosperous young rancher of the Carmel, who was found yesterday buried beneath a load of hay. When the accident was discovered, life had been extinct for some time.

Early in the afternoon SEELEY went from his home near the BERWICK ranch, on the Carmel, to a hayfield intending to bring home a load of hay. He was helped to load the hay upon the wagon by a farm hand, who remained at the stack after the hay was loaded. It was estimated that there were about 2 tons on the load and SEELEY started his team towards home. When about half way from the field to his barn, he came to a side hill and the rain made the ground soft. As a result, the wagon slipped from the track and overturned, the driver falling beneath the load. It is believed that he was instantly killed.

The deceased was a young man, who has lived for a number of years on the Carmel, and about 6 months ago was married to a popular young lady of Monterey. A part of the time he lived on his ranch and the remainder in Monterey. Coroner MULLER was summoned and left for the scene of the accident this morning where he expected to hold an inquest this afternoon.
