Henry Woodson Seeley

Henry Woodson Seeley was born Nov. 12, 1905 in Saticoy, Calif. and died March 2, 2003. He was 97.

Henry was born to Charles and Virginia Seeley. He was one of five children born to the Seeley family. Two brothers, Reed and Ernest Seeley, preceded Henry in death. He has two sisters in Bakersfield, Pearls Olds and Della Boyton. Henry has two daughters, Sandra Nielsen of Bakersfield and Faith Morrison of Kernville. He had two grandchildren, Scott Stepherson of Sacramento and Kim Dhooge of San Diego. He has five great-grandchildren – Miranda Stepherson, Phillip Stepherson and Quinten Stepherson, all of Sacramento, and John Ryan Dhooge and Kevin Dhooge, both of San Diego. Henry had many nieces and nephews.

Henry and his family move from Saticoy to Glennville when Henry was two years old. Then later his family settled in Woody, where they owned a ranch at the base of the Blue Mountain where they raised cattle and lived the good life. Henry helped on the ranch until he went to work for Miller and Lux in Bakersfield, poisoning squirrels in the Buttonwillow area. He worked there during the Depression, in 1929 going to work for the county road department. He worked in Glennville until 1935, then transferred to Old Kernville, living there until Kernville was moved upriver to make way for Isabella Lake. He became road foreman and was involved in many of the nice roads we have up here today. Henry retired in 1965.

He was one of the original members of the Kern River Valley Flying Club. He was the oldest and first to go solo and get his license. He loved to fly and spent many hours in the air.

After retirement he and his wife Lucille traveled the United States and Canada with their trailer for many years, until Lucille became ill and was no longer able to travel. They had many fond memories of all their travels and would show all the pictures to anyone who would sit still long enough to show them to. Henry had a way with a camera and had many beautiful pictures.

Henry was a member of the Moose Lodge for many years and spent many evening there with his friends. He loved to dance and thought a lot of Buddy Landrum’s music.

There will be a memorial service in the Moose Lodge in Lake Isabella on Saturday, March 29, 2003, at 2 p.m. All of you who knew and loved Henry are invited to attend. The family asks that you make a donation to the Hospice Foundation in lieu of flowers.
