Long Beach Musician Charles “Ed” Seeley Dies

Friends were notified Sunday of the death of Charles “Ed” Seeley, 77, of 3716 Pine Ave., lifelong professional musician and long-time percussionist with the Long Beach Municipal Band.

Seeley died from a heart attack as he sat by a campfire with his wife at Barton Flats, above Redlands, Saturday night.

His wife, Patsy, consultant on educational television in the office of the Los Angeles County superintendent of schools, returned to Long Beach Sunday.

In accord with the musician’s known wish, no funeral for him will be held. The Seeleys were on a weekend camp-out at their Favorite Barton Flats campsite, and were sitting by the campfire, when without warning Seeley fell. Mrs. Seeley got help from other campers, but her husband could not be revived. Seeley started his career in music in the early 1900’s as a player in a dance band on the old Venice pier. Seeley played for years at the Cathay Circle Theater in Hollywood. His many year membership in the Long Beach Municipal Band, as percussionist, ended with his retirement five years ago. The musician was a member of the Masons and Elks and of Locals 353 and 47 of the Musicians Association.
