BARBARA SANFORD (ROWE) CILLEY BURLINGTON

Barbara Sanford (Rowe) Cilley of Burlington died peacefully at her home Jan. 22, 2005. She was born April 30, 1917, in South Newbury, N.H., to Arthur Eugene Rowe and Bessie Louise (Marshall) Rowe. Barbara attended public schools in South Newbury and Henniker, N.H. She was a graduate of The School of Practical Art in Boston, Mass. She married Wesley Adams Cilley on Oct. 28, 1939, in South Newbury. They were married over 62 years, until his death in February, 2002. Barbara enjoyed gardening, sewing, oil painting, ballroom dancing, alpine and cross- country skiing, playing bridge, cooking, meeting new people and traveling to many parts of the world. While her husband built a successful accounting practice, Barbara tended to the many activities of their four children, hosted many family celebrations and entertained friends and business associates. She had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Klifa Club, P.E.O., Coterie and Vermont Artists Association. As an active member of First Congregational Church for over 50 years, Barbara had served as a Deaconess, Choir Mother, and a volunteer in the Possibility Shop and for Meals on Wheels. She is survived by her children, JoAnn Barbara (and Ewing) Stringfellow of North Bend, Wash., John Wesley (and Charlotte) Cilley of Laconia, N.H., David Arthur (and Judith) Cilley of Hong Kong, Laura Jean Cilley (and Omar Bouchard) of Danvers, Mass.; her niece, Brenda Rowe (and Gerard) McGovern; a grandniece; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom were inspired by her, loved her dearly and miss her very much. She was predeceased by her brother, Marshall Rowe in December, 2004. A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church Saturday, April 23, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Champlain Valley, Colchester, Vt. 05446; or First Congregational Church, South Winooski Avenue, Burlington, Vt. 05401.
