At the age of 83 years 3 months and 28 days, ex-Bishop William E. Seely died last evening at 10 o’clock, the primary cause of his death being senility, the immediate cause, congestion of the liver and heart failure.
Bishop Seely was been one of the most prominent personages in the history of Mount Pleasant from its early settlement down to the last few years. He was also a conspicuous figure in Mormon history in Illinois, being one of the guards at the temple when Joseph Smith was killed. He was the first bishop chosen for this ward, holding the position up to a few years ago and had the full confidence and respect of his people, even the Indians honoring their veteran counselor as no other white person.
Mr. Seely has been married four times, the first being in Canada, where he was born. Three of his wives survive him, also twelve children.
For a number of years past his health has been gradually failing, and his death has been momentarily expected for months at a time, but with an iron constitution, he would rally and recover sufficiently to appear on the streets. His vigor has been something remarkable.
