CHARLESTON, IL – Victor Wayne Seeley, age 100 of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at his Brookstone Estates of Charleston home. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Funeral Services, honoring and celebrating his life, will begin at 1:30 p.m. on November 16 at the funeral chapel with David Ferguson officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will follow at Mound Cemetery in Charleston. Memorials in Wayne’s honor may be made to Lake Land Church of Christ or to Schults-Lewis Children’s Home. Cards and gifts may be left at the visitation/service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.
Wayne was born June 21, 1919 in Longview, Illinois, a son of the late Robert and Zoe (Deppen) Seeley. He attended Rardin High School, where he also played basketball, before moving to Indiana where he graduated from Saluda High School. On July 7, 1940 Wayne married the love of his life, Geneva Ellen Stevens and they shared an enduring marriage and friendship for nearly 63 years prior to her death on April 8, 2003.
Wayne worked for an oil drilling company and Montgomery Ward before being inducted into the U.S. Navy where he served his tour of duty in the Philippines, Hawaii, Australia, Okinawa and Panama Canal. He served with the Radar Division where he attained a patent for the Navy. Upon returning from his military service, Wayne built homes and also attended Eastern Illinois University, where he graduated with both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Elementary Education. Shortly thereafter Wayne began his employment with the Charleston School District. He was a teacher, coach, and principal for many years and his work ethic was greatly admired. He also worked as a real estate broker, selling homes in the Charleston area and served his community as a Charleston City Council member. Wayne left the Charleston community for an administrative position in Crossville, Illinois and later at Momence, Illinois.
Upon his retirement, he and Geneva returned to Charleston where he worked closely with the Church of Christ and also taught correspondence programs throughout many countries for World Bible Studies. Wayne was a lifetime Bible Scholar and studied daily in his extensive home library. He was a faithful longtime member and Elder of Charleston Church of Christ, where he preached and taught Bible classes. Wayne was also a sports fan. He attended and closely followed all the granddaughters sporting events, as well as other school activities. He was an avid fan of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini and Big 10 sports. Wayne was a gifted writer and enjoyed writing poetry and songs for his wife to compose, some of which were published. Retirement allowed Wayne and Geneva to spend time with family during the winters in California.
Wayne was a faithful and devoted friend to many and enjoyed visits with local residents. He was well deserving of the respect and admiration of all who knew him. He will always be remembered as a kind and considerate man, due to the ways he treated others. He leaves the blessings of many loving memories for his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Wayne leaves behind his daughter, Carolyn Young and husband John of Newport Beach, California and their family, Kim Baker and her daughter Kayla of Germantown, Tennessee; Kristi Loiselle, her husband Tim and their daughter Mia of Rancho Santa Margarita, California; and Kari Young of Irvine, California. He also leaves his son, Victor Seeley and wife Linda of Lerna, Illinois and their family, Melissa Walsh, her husband Tom and their daughters, Eleanor, Geneva and Violet of Glenview, Illinois; Marcia Bellair, her husband Tom and their daughters, Olivia, Julia and Amelia also of Glenview; and his brother, Ellis Seeley of Indiana. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a stepmother, three sisters and three brothers.
