Richard Seely

PORTAGE – Richard Seely, age 81, died on Thursday Oct. 10, 2002, at Divine Savior Health Care, Portage. Richard was born on Dec. 30, 1920, in Madison, Wis., the son of Elmer and Helen (Thurman) Seely. He graduated from Madison East High School. Richard worked for the Wisconsin Power and Light Company as a tree trimmer around the state. He married Mary E. Lurvey on Nov. 8, 1941 at First Presbyterian Church in Portage. They lived in Green Lake before he was inducted into the Air Corps on July 20, 1943. He served as a tail gunner in the 8th Air Force Station in England. On Nov. 30, 1944, his B-17 was shot down and he was wounded and in a German prison hospital. He was then moved to a prison camp until he was released and discharged. After his release he returned to Portage and continued employment with Wisconsin Power and Light. He moved from Portage to Wyocena in 1948 as a local representative of WP&L. He retired from WP&L as a local representative in 1982. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary of Portage; three sons, Steven L. of Wyocena, Richard M. (Eleanor) of Portage, and Scott V. (Peggy) of Madison; a daughter-in-law, Naomi Seely of Hilo, Hawaii; five grandchildren, Wendy Seely, Terry (Suzi) Seely, Lisa (Scott) Peterson, R.C. Seely II and Jeanette Seely; four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Zachary Peterson, Austin Seely and Jace Seely; and two nieces, Sharon (Charles) Marquardt of Eau Claire, and Dorothy (Richard) Taylor of Madison. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; three sisters; a grandson, Ryan Seely; and a son Patrick John, this year. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Port Axtell Community Funeral Home, Portage is assisting the family with arrangements.
