Richard James Seeley

Phoenix – Richard James Seeley, a WW II veteran and former teacher and guidance counselor, died in Phoenix, AZ on March 4, 2018, at the age of 94.

Dick was born on March 19, 1923 in Caton, NY to Mildred Cora Smith and Richard Jessie Seeley. He spent his childhood working on his family’s dairy farm in Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1941 and proudly served for 7 years. He graduated from SUNY Oswego in 1951. Dick married his college sweetheart, Laurel Seger, and they continued their adventures together as teachers in South Dakota, Colorado, and New York. Dick moved to Scottsdale with his young family in 1966. He continued his education at Arizona State University, while working as a guidance counselor for the Scottsdale Unified Schools. He graduated with his MA in Education in 1976. Family and friends will remember Dick for his love of family and his passion for jazz, NASCAR, homemade ice-cream, and cherry pie.

Dick was preceded in death by his devoted daughters, Kathryn A. Seeley and Lynda C. Seeley; his proud parents, Mildred C. Smith and Richard J. Seeley; his brother, Jonas A. Seeley; his sister, Marilyn M. Seeley Cowburn and brother-in-law, Arthur Cowburn; his nephew, Larry W. Hough; and his former wife and lifelong friend, Laurel Seger Seeley. He is survived by cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Military funeral honors for Dick will be held in Pennsylvania.
