Rev. J.B. Seely

Rev. J.B. Seely was born in Litchfield, Conn., Oct. 31th, 1809, and passed to his eternal reward from his earthly home in Brookfield, Tioga Co., Pa., Sept. 19th, 1884, Brother Seely was converted in 1838 while attending an old fashioned Methodist meeting held in a private house, and very soon afterward felt moved to declare the truth of the Gospel; he was accordingly duly licensed and at once entered upon the work which occupied his attention more or less fully so long as he remained upon the Earth. He was married in July 1855 to Miss Cynthia Seelye who survives her husband. While in attendance upon the East Genesee Annual Conference, held at Dansville, N.Y., in 1855 Bishop Waugh ordained Brother Seely to the office and work of a deacon, to which he ever sought to be true, and for a number of years he traveled Tioga and Potter counties in Pennsylvania, preaching to the people whenever and wherever they could be congregated. Brother Seely subscribed for the NORTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE at its very birth, and for more than forty years watched with eagerness for its weekly visit. He having at one time ordered that it be continued until his obituary should appear. In 1865 he was stricken with typhoid fever from which he never fully recovered. As the last Winter approached he began to decline rapidly, although he lingered until the date mentioned above. Having “fought a good fight and finished his course and kept the faith” for nearly fifty years he departed in triumph. Among his last utterances were, “Dear Jesus” and “perfect victory,” and when he could no long speak he raised his hand in testimony of saving grace. His funeral was attended by a very large concourse of relatives and friends from the Methodist Episcopal Church at Austinburg, Pa. Thus a loyal Christian, a faithful husband and a kind member of society has gone to be with Christ.
