Death Takes Fine Man

Randolph Marshall Seeley Passes Away at a Ripe Age

The death of Randolph Marshall Seeley, one of the highly esteemed citizens for this community, occurred shortly before noon last Sunday at his home on the Danville road.  Mr. Seeley had suffered a stroke of apoplexy on the previous Wednesday.  He was taken to his bed in an unconscious condition and continued in that state until he passed away.  Dr. D.F. Heilman attended him.

Mr. Seeley was 83 years old, having been born on October 8, 1828.  He was a native of Tuckahoe, Cape May county, New Jersey, and when a young man he was engaged as a window glass cutter in that state.  Later he came to Pennsylvania and settled in Covington, Tioga county, where he followed his trade.  Then he moved to Blossburg, in the same county, where he became one of the proprietors of a window glass manufacturing plant.  He continued in that business for about ten years.  During the last two years he spent in that place he conducted a hardware store.

In 1856, on the 24th of January, Mr. Seeley was married to Miss Hannah M. Sherwood of Mansfield, Tioga county, Pa.  They came to Northumberland in the Fall of 1874, and after clerking in the Johnson store for a year or more he retired from active life.  For a number of years he held the office of Borough Treasurer.

When sixteen years of age Mr. Seeley became a member of the M.E. Church and those who knew him best say that he always endeavored to live in accordance with the Christian faith.  He was also a Mason, joining that order in Covington in 1856, and becoming a member of Eureka Lodge when he moved to Northumberland.

Besides his widow, the deceased leaves two sons, Charles S. Seeley of this place, and E.D.C. Seeley of Morrisville, N.Y.

The funeral was held at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon.  Rev. Isaac Cadman of the M.E. Church officiated.  E.K. Bright was the funeral director.  The local Masonic Lodge conducted the service at the grave in Riverview cemetery.

Two years ago Mr. Seeley had a severe attack of pneumonia, and slight hopes were entertained for his recovery at that time, but possessing a strong vitality, he finally regained his health.

During the past summer he took a great interest in his garden, and was active in cultivating it.

Among those who attended the funeral from out of town were George Sherwood of Rochester, N.Y., Orville S. Sherwood of Hazelton, Pa., Warren S. Sherwood of Sidney, N.Y., all brothers of Mrs. Seeley; Harry Seeley, a grandson, and wife of Kingston, and Harry Sherwood and wife, a nephew and niece of Geneva, N.Y.
