Heart attack in Australia fatal for Mabel Seelye

The family of Mrs. Mabel I. Seelye is awaiting word from Sydney, Australia, on the return to Lansing of Mrs. Seelye’s body.

Mrs. Seelye, 78, was made an honorary life member of the Women’s Board of Managers of Sparrow Hospital in 1970 following 26 years of service on the board.

Long active in Lansing arts and theaters, Mrs. Seelye suffered a heart attack last Wednesday while visiting Australia with a group of friends on the Perci Tours arranged through the Waldo Travel Agency.

Mrs. Seelye is the wife of the former Wilber Seelye Sr., a Lansing attorney from 1924 until his death in 1964.

Arrangements are being made by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Mrs. Seelye, age 78, died March 15, 1979 at St. Vincent Hospital in Sydney, Australia while on vacation.  She was born June 2, 1900 in Kalamazoo.  She received her teaching certificate from Western State Normal (WMU) at Kalamazoo in 1922 and taught for 2 years in the Battle Creek Public School, taught in the Lansing Public Schools for 2 years after her arrival in Lansing in 1924.  Her husband Wilber M., Sr. and Son David M., attorneys-at-law, preceded her in death. In addition to her continued devotion to music, the arts, the theatre, literature and travel she served as President of the Lawyer’s Wifes of Ingham County, served on the Woman’s Board of Managers of Sparrow Hospital for 26 years, resigning in 1970 as an Honorary Life Member.  She was a member of the Lansing Woman’s Club, Woman’s National Farm and Garden Club, Lansing branch, member of the Grandmother’s Club of the Lansing Child Study Club, member of the U & I Club.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lansing.  Surviving are: daughter, Mrs. Douglas (Sylvia) Hill of Indianapolis, Ind., a son, Wilber M. Jr. of Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Martha Seelye) Hines of Lansing; 3 sisters Mrs. Martha Emmons, Mrs. Francis Moon and Mrs. Neil Burmania, all of Kalamazoo and 9 grandchildren.  Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. Julius Fischbach and Rev. Charles R. Landon, Jr. officiating, with interment in Evergreen Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.  Memorials may be made to the E.W. Sparrow Hospital, Coronary Care Unit.
