JAMES M. SEELY

Died Yesterday at the Family Home on Prince Street

James M. Seely, of No. 51 Prince street, died at the family home at midnight Wednesday, aged 63 years. Mr. Seely had been in poor health for the past five or six years. He had been accustomed to spend his winters in Florida, but was too ill this winter to go to the land of sunshine and warmth, and his constitution was not sufficiently ragged to withstand the Northern winter.

Mr. Seely was quite well known in this city, where he had lived for several years. At one time he was connected with the old Hop Bitters Company. He was born in Savannah, Wayne county, this state, and from there he went to Detroit, where he engaged in the manufacture of perfumes and extracts. He there built up a very extensive wholesale business, one of the largest in the West. He sold out there in 1880, returned to New York state and became connected with Asa T. Soule. He was placed in charge of a branch of the Hop Bitters Company at Toronto, Canada, and remained there two years. About this time he and Mr. Soule went to London, England, and established there a branch office, and Mr. Seely was given control of this. He remained there five or six years, coming from there direct to Rochester, and had since lived at the home on Prince street.

He was a remarkable able business man, very successful in all his undertakings. He had not been engaged in business for the past few years, spending his summers in Rochester and his winters on his orange farm in Florida. He also owned farms in Savannah, this state.

Three sons and two daughters survive. They are Lyman, Joseph and James Seely and Flora and Maud Seely. The funeral will be held to-morrow afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family home, the Rev. Dr. R.D. Harland, of the Third Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be at Riverside cemetery.
