Harry Seely, retired Navy rear admiral

TAMPA – Harry ”Hank” W. Seely, retired rear admiral of the U.S. Navy, died Thursday (July 16, 1987). He was 77.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., he had lived in Tampa for the past 10 years.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 1932, he served on the battleships New York and Mississippi. He served on the staff of Admiral Harry E. Yarnell, commander in chief of the Asiatic Fleet. In 1940, he was assigned to the Navy Contingent at the New York World’s Fair, and the following year, he put the USS Washington into commission. During his career in the Navy, he served two tours of duty and was commanding officer of the USS Whitley. He retired in 1956.

After his retirement, he worked 13 years for Texas Instruments Inc. as an executive director and manager of the Washington office.

He was a member of the Naval Academy Alumni Association, the Tampa Orchid Society, the American Orchid Society, the Tampa Navy League and the Carrollwood Village Golf and Tennis Club.

Survivors include his wife, Louise, Tampa; two sons, Harry W. Jr., Jackson, Miss., and Richard M. Wooten, Columbia, Md.; a sister Margot Drew, Orlando, and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. A graveside service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center or the American Cancer Society are preferred. Arrangements are being handled by Curry & Son Funeral Home, Tampa.
