Frank J. Seely

Osceola – Frank Seely, 85, active in Cowanesque valley mercantile and banking businesses for 60 years, passed away last Tuesday evening at his Osceola home, where illness had confined him to his bed since last October. The aged banker retired from active participation in business affairs in May of 1935 and had been in failing health for several years past.

Frank J. Seely was born at Osceola on November 14, 1854, son of Morgan and Harriet Beebe Seely. After completing his education at the old Cowanesque valley academy for which Academy Corners was named, he went to Nelson in the year 1875 where he entered the mercantile business under the firm name of Seely and Lugg. While a resident of that community he was united in marriage to Miss M. Augusta Phelps on October 22, 1880.

Four years later, Mr. and Mrs. Seely moved to Osceola, where he assumed charge of the Cowanesque bank, a private institution opened by his father, Morgan Seely, in 1887. Here he remained for 16 year when with his family he moved to Westfield to become cashier of the Tucker and Seely bank, later the Farmers and Traders National Bank.

Deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Hugh B. Strang, of Westfield, and Mrs. Robert Albee, of Elmira, a brother, Ed. M. Seely, of Hartford, Conn.: and two grandchildren, Mrs. R. Park Lecky, of Roanoke, Va., and Robert C. Albee, Jr., of Elmira.

Funeral services were held from the late home last Saturday, with Rev. W.E. Ruch, Presbyterian pastor officiating; burial in Fairview cemetery at Osceola.
