She was born on September 22, 1918, in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Florence Miller Weitzman. Her family moved to Utica when Dorothy was one year old. Dorothy attended Utica schools and graduated from Cornell University in 1940. She loved to dance and while a student at Cornell, she would demonstrate modern dance techniques for Martha Graham when she visited classes there. A woman of determination and good humor, Dorothy involved herself in a variety of activities. She had a successful career as a third grade teacher at Kemble Street School in Utica and is still fondly remembered by her students. She was an avid golfer and belonged to the Women’s District Golf League for fifty years. She was a member of Higby Hills, the Yahnundasis and Thendara Golf Clubs. At age 80, she had a hole in one which thrilled her. At one time she also belonged to the Utica Curling Club. Dorothy was an active member of Temple Beth El and past president of its sisterhood as well as a member of hadassah. She played mah jong and bridge and loved sitting on the dock of her camp in Old Forge. Dorothy was formerly married to Seymour Brooks, DDS. She married Gordon F. Seely in 1970. Mr. Seely passed away in 1973. She is survived by her devoted children, Barbara Brooks Goodman, and William and Jill Brooks, all of New Hartford; her three grandchildren, Rachel Goodman and Stephen Goodman, both of Baltimore, MD and Amy Brooks of New Hartford; her brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Gail Weitzman of Boca Raton, FL; her sister-in-law, Ruth Weitzman of New Hartford. Dorothy was beloved “Aunt Dot” to her nieces and nephews, Adele and Robert Sossen, David and Sharon Weitzman, Ann and Alan Nathan, Alan Braverman and Susan Hodge, Charles Braverman and Julia Rosen, Marc and Carol Weitzman, Elisa and Shep Doeleman and Sarah and Bob Parker, as well as their respective children. She was particularly close to her neighbors, Jerry and Carolyn Webre and her good friend and traveling companion, Becky Howland. Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, Charles Weitzman; and her sister, Helen Braverman. Dorothy will be remembered for her strength and her ability to rise above physical challenges with grace and dignity. She always looked ahead and looked beautiful. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Her Funeral will be held on Sunday at 11 a.m. from the Temple Beth El, 1607 Genesee Street, Utica. Interment will be in the Temple Beth El Cemetery, Whitesboro. A Calling hour will be held from 10 AM to the time of the service at Temple. Shiva will be held at Dorothy’s Home on Sunday 7 to 9 p.m., Monday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dorothy’s memory may be made to Temple Beth El or Hospice and Paliative Care, Inc. Dorothy’s family would like to thank the staff of the 1st floor 53 Bed Unit at the Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center for their loving and compassionate care of Dorothy and her family. Her Funeral Arrangements are honored and served by Jacobson-Pizer Funeral Chapel, Inc., 470 French Road, Utica.
