Charles B. Seely Jr

Charles B. Seely, 73, of Oak Knoll, Hollidaysburg, a licensed professional engineer and president of Improved Dwellings for Altoona, died unexpectedly at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 1978, in his home.

Mr. Seely retired as chief structural engineer from Campbell, Rea, Hayes & Large, architects. He was also employed by Truscann Steel Co. and Altoona Pipe & Steel Co.

He was born Dec. 18, 1904, in Pittsburgh, the son of Charles B. and Jean (Shaw) Seely, and Feb. 6, 1925, in Trumansburg, N.Y., married Virginia I. Head.

Surviving are his wife, six children, Charles B. III of Hampton, Iowa, Georgene of Middletown, N.Y., Lawrence H. of Holt, Mich., Patricia Witt of Edgewater, Md., John S. of Hollidaysburg and George H., in Dayton, Ohio, and 14 grandchildren.

Mr. Seely was an elder of the Ward Avenue Presbyterian Church, serving for 30 years as a Sunday school teacher and currently as clerk of the session.

He was a 1925 graduate of Cornell University.

During World War II he served as a major in the Army at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where he was involved in the purchasing of materials.

Mr. Seely was a member of the Blair-Bedford Council of Boy Scouts of America, and received the council’s Order of the Arrow award. He participated in organizing a troop for handicapped Scouts through the Easter Seal Society and the American Business Club, where he was a former past president and currently served as secretary.

He was a member of the Juniata Lodge, F&AM, Altoona Scottish Rite bodies and Jatla Shrine.

He was on the board of directors of the Hollidaysburg Free Public Library and served as president of the board when the new library building was constructed.

Mr. Seely was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and past president of the Blair County Chapter, National Society of Professional Engineers.

He was a member of the board of the Allenna Federal Savings and Loan Association and was serving as chairman of the board.

In 1972 he became a member of the board of directors of IDA, served as president of Evergreen Manors board of directors and was on IDA’s rehabilitation committee. He became president of IDA in July 1978.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Plank & Stitt Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg.

SEELY – Services for Charles B. Seely Jr. of Oak Knoll, Hollidaysburg, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Plank & Stitt Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg, by the Rev. Douglas R. McGaffin. Entombment in Alto-Reste Burial Park. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Plank & Stitt Funeral Home Inc., where Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to the Hollidaysburg Free Public Library or the charity of their choice.
