Betsy Jane Seely
BETSY JANE SEELY was born in Guilford, Vt., Nov. 5, 1818 and died in Spafford, N.Y., April 9, 1881.
She was the daughter of Elias Jacobs, who moved from Vermont to Preble, N.Y., when the subject of this sketch was about five years old. She was a sister to the wife of Rev. James Gutsell, of the Central New York Conference. From Preble, Brother Jacobs, with his family, removed to Otisco Valley, N.Y., where, at the age of twelve years Sister Seely was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1836 she was married to Hiram Seely, of Spafford, N.Y., whither she removed her residence and her church connection. She leaves her husband and two sons with their families, also numerous other relatives to mourn her departure. For fifty years she has been a faithful, devoted member of the church, doing willingly and gladly what she could for the glory of God and the good of humanity. By precept and example she taught those with whom she associated the reality of the religion of Christ. Her sickness was short and painful, and death came suddenly, but she was found watching and ready to go. When asked if she had anything to say, she replied to her husband, “I am in such pain that I cannot talk much, but be faithful and we shall soon meet again.” By her death her husband, who is infirm and partially helpless from the effects of paralysis, loses a faithful and devoted wife, her children a loving mother, the church a valuable member, and the community a true Christian. “Mark the perfect man and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace.”
