Year 100 Nears for Emery Resident

CASTLE DALE, Emery County – Henry Alonzo Seely, one of the county’s oldest residents, will celebrate his 100th birthday Thursday.

The last living member of nine children, Mr. Seely was born in Mount Pleasant, Sanpete County, to Orange and Hannah Olsen Seely.

At the age of 3, he traveled by covered wagon with his parents to settle in the Castle Valley area, where he has lived since.

Engaged in farming and livestock raising in Emery County, Mr. Seely and his brother Dave were partners in a cattle business for several years. After the business was dissolved, he rode with the cattle.

The father of two sons, Henry and Jake, he married Emma Elizabeth Jacobsen Feb. 14, 1894. She died Sept. 29, 1941. He married Mary Johanna Nielsen Dec. 27, 1927. She died in March, 1959.

A Ferron nursing home in Emery County, where the centenarian has lived for more than five years, will Thursday honor Mr. Seely during a birthday celebration.

Mrs. Jake Seely New, Mr. Seely’s daughter-in-law, will furnish a birthday cake for a second celebration Dec. 12, which the family will attend.
