He was the son of the late Seth SEELY of Saint John city and grandson of Seth Seely of Stramford, Connecticut, a United Empire Loyalist. He received his education in this city and at an early age engaged in the lumber business in Indiantown, first as a clerk in the office of the late Thomas McMAKIN, lumber merchant where he remained from about 1834 to 1837, and in 1838 he opened up a business in this line at Indiantown on his own behalf. He he continued until about 1851 or 1852 when he sold his residence there, which afterwards burned, to John F. GODARD, the present Town Clerk of Portland, and removed to this city, where he engaged in shipbuilding; to this time however he had built a couple of vessels across the river from Indiantown. He took a prominent part in banking affairs and was closely identified with the educational and missionary societies of the Baptist Church of which he was zealous member. He was a member of the Senate of U.N.B.; vice-president of N.B. Baptist Educational Society, of the N.B. Baptist Mome Missionary Board and of the Baptist Convention of N.B. and N.S. He was also President of the St. John Religious Tract Society and for several years President of the old Commercial Bank of this city. Mr. SEELY was called to the Legislative Council in 1854 and in 1875 was elected to the Presidency of the Council made vacant by the death of Hon. John Simcoe SAUNDERS. The Hon. Mr. Seely was twice married, his first wife being Miss MORRELL of this city, by whom he had three daughters and two sons. The eldest daughter married the late Rev. E.B. DEMILL; his second daughter, Capt. BERRYMAN of London; and the third, J.H. ROBINSON of this city. His eldest son is at present accountant in the offices of the New Brunswick Railway at Gibson (York Co.) and the sad death of his second son, Capt. SEELY was reported only a few days ago. His second wife, by whom he had three sons and one daughter, survives him. ‘St. John Sun’
