A. Ruth Seeley, 86, died peacefully at her West Pittston home, on Thursday, June 21, 2007, in the presence of her family.

Born on November 11, 1920, in West Pittston, Mrs. Seeley was a daughter of the late Aaron and Sarah (Tilley) Hastie.

When she was a young child, her father called her “Tiny” because of her lack of physical stature. It was a nickname that stayed with her for the remainder of her life.

During her youth, she excelled in school and at both swimming and gymnastics. She graduated from West Pittston High School in 1938.

Mrs. Seeley received her training as a Registered Nurse at the Wyoming Valley Homeopathic Hospital, graduating in a tie for first in her class.

She soon enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served her country for four years during World War II, in the United States as well as in both England and France.

During the war, she married Harry S. Cook, a native of Michigan, who was killed in action 19 months later. After her husband’s death, she voluntarily returned to service at a hospital in Atlantic City so that she could care for amputees.

In 1953, she married Robert Donald Seeley, a native of Kingston. Mr. and Mrs. Seeley resided in West Pittston throughout their marriage and were virtually constant companions who enjoyed a variety of activities together until Mr. Seeley’s death in July of 2006.

At various times, Mrs. Seeley served as a bookkeeper for the Welfare Planning Council, the Boy Scouts of America, and Garden Village Advertising, Inc.

She was active in several organizations within her community. From her childhood to her death, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pittston, where she sang in the church choir for many years.

She also shared her beautiful soprano voice as a member of the Sweet Adeline’s singing group. She was a member of the West Pittston Women’s Club, West Pittston Cambrian Club, Irem Women’s Auxiliary, and Irem Stewards Ladies.

Mrs. Seeley was passionate about many things. She loved her family with tremendous depth and was never too busy or too tired when they needed her. She took great pride, and exhibited great interest, in her Welsh and Scottish heritages.

She expressed her love of dogs through her support of the SPCA. She derived great pleasure from working in her yard and delighted in the many beautiful flowers that one could find there.

Mrs. Seeley was preceded in death by her sister, S. Elizabeth (Hastie) Robertson; and brothers, Myrddyn C. Hastie and Alexander G. Hastie.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Robert Dwight and Janis Wilson Seeley, of Shavertown; grandchildren, Jillian W. and R. Dylan Seeley, of Shavertown, and Karena N. Richards, of New York City; brothers, William A. Hastie, of West Pittston, and R. Keith Hastie, of Annandale, Va.; 14 nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Seeley’s funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home, 509 Wyoming Ave., West Pittston, with the Rev. William Lukesh officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Shrine Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to the SPCA, 524 E. Main Street, Fox Hill Road, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
