Martha D. Martin

Nov. 11, 1915 – Oct. 5, 2006

Martha D. Martin, 90, formerly of 401 Eighth St. in Charles City and a resident of Salsbury Baptist Home, died Thursday morning, Oct. 5, 2006, at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City with family at her side.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane in Charles City, with Rev. Ruth Yeaton officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Martha D. Martin Memorial Fund.

Martha Damsel Martin was born Nov. 11, 1915, in Gifford, Ill., the daughter of John L. and Venner E. (Ray) Tash. Martha attended school in Illinois and graduated high school, Class of 1933. On Oct. 2, 1935, Martha was united in marriage to Charles H. Martin in Mt. Clemons, Mich. She was very active with First Baptist Church in Charles City, the Kodiak church circle and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Martha had been a homemaker and lived most of her life in Charles City.

Martha was active in life. Her interest and activities included being a part of both the V.F.W. and American Legion ladies auxiliary, a volunteer at the YMCA and her involvement with Navy Mothers. She was a devoted and loving wife, nurturing mother, a kind and gracious grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She treasured time spent with friends and family, and they will dearly miss her.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her children, David Martin and his wife Elfriede of Olympia, Wash., Sharon Sylvester Jorgensen and her husband Charles of Clear Lake and Mary Slifka of Grundy Center; seven grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters; three sisters, Marie Grein of Illinois, Freda Corson of Indiana and Hilda Dixon of Illinois; and one brother, Robert Tash of Florida.

Mrs. Martin is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles H. Martin on Jan. 2, 2003; granddaughter, Sherri Cosgriff; one great-great-grandson; son-in-law Gary Sylvester; son-in-law Kenneth Slifka; one brother, John J. Tash; and two nephews, Donald Tash and John E. Tash.
