Esther L. Winkler

September 18, 1927 – November 3, 2014

RITTMAN — Esther L. Winkler, 87, of Rittman, died Monday, November 3, 2014 at her residence.

She was born September 18, 1927 in Guilford Township, Ohio to the late Ernie and Marion (Seeley) Cahoon and has lived in the Rittman area all of her life.

Esther graduated from Seville High School and from Kent State University. She married Harold “Dick” Winkler on May 11, 1946, he survives. She was a school teacher in Rittman for 25 years, retiring in 1990.

Esther was a member of the Milton Presbyterian Church, Wadsworth Investment Club, Rawiga and Westfield Country Clubs and was an avid golfer. In the 1970’s she was dedicated to working for peace through the American Friends Service Committee. She spent countless hours working the booths at local street fairs and marching for peace with her children by her side.

Surviving is husband, Dick; sons, Bill (Elizabeth) Winkler of Ft. Myers, Florida, Dan (Karen) Winkler of Bainbridge, Ohio and Jack (Leslie) Winkler of Scottsdale, Arizona; daughter, Leslie Steiner of Rittman; grandchildren, Kelly (Brad) Bettinger of Cincinnati, Kitsie (Matt) Ferguson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Adam (Tonya) Winkler of Pittsburgh, Pa., Christy Winkler of Florida and Alissa Winkler of Chicago, Ill.; eight great grandchildren; special “children”, Leah Winkler of Cincinnati and Jerry Bensinger of Medina; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Howard Cahoon; sisters, Gladys Gordon and Nina Winkler; and special “son”, Ed Winkler.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at Milton Presbyterian Church, 250 North St., Rittman with Rev. Alex Barnes officiating. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday at the church.

The family would like to thank LifeCare Hospice for their compassionate and loving care of Esther during her illness.
